Yes, friends! We are expecting a BOY!

New Roebuck baby boy on the way and due around August 1. I am 14 weeks along, and we saw on the ultrasound today definitive proof that we indeed have a little boy on the way! We are thankful and excited.

One of the reasons we decided to find out the gender before the birth this time is that Max and Maggie both had their hearts set on their hope of gender for the baby. Max really wanted a baby brother while Maggie really, really wanted a sister. We hope that by finding our early, each of them can process that news early on and by the time baby arrives, it will just be what's expected and we can be all excitement and no disappointment when the big day arrives.

SO.... Maximus is of course overjoyed that it's a boy. He has been studying the ultrasound pictures and is beyond excited about the new brother on the way.

Maggie was, to put it delicately, disappointed. Here's how she took the news:

Lucas: We are having.... a baby BOY!

Maggie: (collapsing to the ground and bursting into tears) NO!! BUT I WANTED A GIRL!!

Lucas: I know, but how about a chocolate bar instead?

Maggie: (tears immediately stopping and she stands up) okay.

And that was that. Nothing like chocolate to soothe a girl's dashed hopes.

Now that we're past that little disappointment for Maggie, we're all excitement. We're thanking God for this great news and praying for health and safety all along the way!

NWA folks: As the holidays approach, several Walmart vendor companies are hosting their annual sample sales. I'll be posting the upcoming sales for anyone who want to check them out! If you've never been sample sale shopping before, here are a few things to remember:

• What is a Sample Sale? Samples Sales are sort of like garage sales for Walmart vendor companies in NWA. Many companies have a constant influx of sample products in their offices, and occasionally they put these products out for public sale at really cheap prices, hence the "sample sale."

• Go early. Just like yard sales, the early bird gets the worm. The hard-core sample sale crowd is waiting in line for the door to be unlocked. If you want the best stuff at the cheapest prices, this is the way to go.

• Most sales are cash only. Hit the ATM before you shop.

• Inspect closely. Some of the merchandise might be slightly damaged or non-functioning, so check closely before you buy!

• Enjoy the adventure! Sample sales are like a treasure hunt! Grab a girlfriend and enjoy the adventure together!

How to get 'Back in the Saddle'

Okay, couponing friends: Maybe you're like me, and you've fallen off the couponing bandwagon for a few weeks. Or a few months. Or a year. Perhaps your expanding grocery/household budget is starting to be the tell-tale sign that you need to get back in the couponing saddle. I'm right there with you!

After some pretty major things in our family's life this spring ( the death of my husband's grandmother, a life-changing trip to India withInternational Princess Project, a 4,500-mile family road trip with a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, and few roller-coaster months with my mom's battle with cancer, just to name a few!) I feel like I am finally beginning to dig out of the hole I've been in. For me, this means things like, oh, I'm actually mopping my floors again.

For you, dear Frugal Muse readers, this exit from my spring hibernation means that I am back to the world of couponing and blogging. My goal is to post at least one deal or coupon match-up per day, so check back often so you don't miss out on the best stuff!

Need some help getting motivated to get back into couponing? Here are three ideas:

1. Start Small

This is a method I often have to employ in my life. I may not be able to do it all, but I can do something. If you're staring at a pile of dozens of coupon inserts waiting to be clipped and sorted, it may not be best to try to clip and sort them all before you go shopping with your coupons again.

Instead, visit your favorite frugal blogs and find one store that has some good current coupon deals. Clip only those coupons and go getcha some deals. (Here's a tip: most blogs list the date of the coupon insert in which to find a particular coupon. Did you know that the date for each insert is found in tiny type on the spine of the insert? This can save you so much time! No more going through a bunch of inserts looking for one particular coupon!)

This immediate success will give you some more motivation to tackle your big pile little by little until you are back on track.

2. Make it Social

If you are ready to tackle that big pile of coupons, find a friend or two who is ready to do the same and get together for a little clipping party. Everything is better with friends! You can chat, clip and sort, and encourage each other to get back on track with your couponing!

3. Ten Minutes a Day

Carve out ten minutes each day to check a handful of frugal blogs to scan for deals that might be helpful to your family. Just a few minutes a day, and it can make a big difference in your family's budget. Often the best deals come and go quickly, so it's important to check each day to make sure to cash in on the best freebies!

The SoBe and the Fiber One each gave a $5 gift card back, so I split into two transactions to keep my out of pocket lower. I first paid $8.75 out of pocket for the Fiber One cereals, then got back a $5 gift card, which I used toward my 2nd transaction. At the end of the 2nd transaction, I got back another $5 gift card for the SoBe.

I didn't realize until I got home that the cashier must have made a mistake on my transaction- the way I figure it she undercharged me $10. I called the store back and asked the manager what to do to make this right, but he said basically said to consider it a gift because it would be too complicated to try to make this right from their end. So, I ended up with a SUPER sweet deal today!

The total I spent on both transactions out of pocket (including tax) was $10.55. Plus, I got a $5 gift card back, AND I will submit for the $5 rebate when you buy three products from SC Johnson!

Final cost after rebates and gift cards: $.55

I was truly thanking God for these great finds, as we were really needing the cleaning supplies, and this family goes through cereal like nobody's business and my stockpile has been gone for a month now. Yay for a successful couponing trip after my hiatus!

I'm Heading to India!

Friends, I have some exciting news: I am going to India! As many of you know, my sister-in-law Laura is the director of International Princess Project, a non-profit organization founded by Christians to help women in India who have been rescued or escaped from a life of forced prostitution. IPP takes these women/girls in, gives them a home, and teaches them a sustainable trade: sewing.

I will be traveling with Laura on her next trip to India IN ONE MONTH, March 13-26. In addition to visiting three cities in India, meeting IPP Indian partners and visiting one of the sewing centers where the Indian women are learning to sew and are making Punjammies, I will also have the opportunity to tell the stories of these beautiful women through some photography and writing work that I will do for IPP while in India. I could not be more excited about having the opportunity to contribute to the important ministry at IPP through photography and writing!

I will be working very hard over the course of the next four weeks to check everything off the "Must-do" list to make this trip a reality. All the details from visa applications to immunizations to raising support to preparing my family and kids for me to be gone for two weeks is now looming before me. But as God has opened this door, I am confident that He will provide all that is needed and probably even more. I am certain that I will return home from India six weeks from now as a different person. I can't wait to see what God does in my own heart, and I pray that He will multiply any contribution I am able to make to IPP during this trip so that the important work of redemption in these Indian women's lives will be multiplied as well.

I need to raise $2,300 to cover the cost of my airfare. I also need as many friends and family as can to pray for me, for Laura, and for my family during the preparations and during the trip. = I got all of this free after RRs, plus left with a PROFIT OF $14.31!

The sweetest of these deals were the Spend $25 (before coupons!) Get $5 RR promotion (I did three transactions, so go $15 back in RRs from this), PLUS I just happened to find the Touch of Gray hair color on the clearance aisle for only $1.74, but it still produced the $7 RR for the sale on that product this week!

I could have made much, much more profit with all the great deals this week, but I decided to go for several items that weren't necessarily free, but that my family really needed, like the detergent and the PB and Spaghetti sauce. Also, I forgot to hand the cashier the Walgreens Triaminic coupon on the first transaction, so that cost me $4 that I could have saved, but I was still happy with my end results. My Walgreens Deals: Last Week and This Week!

Has anyone else been to Walgreens for last week's deals or this week's deals? After a few months of less-than-stellar deals (in my humble opinion), Walgreen's is really picking up the pace on great sales!

Here's what I got last week:

I don't have the total breakdown (sorry), but I do know that spent about $32 out-of-pocket (including tax. A LOT, I know), but ended up with $41 in Register Rewards: A $9 profit! Plus, I was able to pick up some stuff we were needing: Nice lotion, razors, dental care items, and even some candy for some upcoming events I'm hosting.

Then, using the RRs from last week's deals to pay, I scored these deals at Walgreens today on some household necessities:

Purchased:

2 boxes Rice Krispies, using rain check for 2/$5

2 boxes of Wheat Thins @ $1

3 packages of Playtex cleaning gloves @$.99 (with in-ad coupon)

3 cans Swanson Chicken Broth @ $.69 (with in-ad coupon)

4 cans Campbell's tomato soup @ $.50 (with in-ad coupon)

2 bottles Purell hand sanitizer @$2.99

1 96-load bottle of All laundry detergent @ $9.99

22 clear dessert cups on clearance for $.09 each! (these served as fillers for using my RRs and manufacturer's Qs, plus I'm planning to use them at an upcoming shower I'm hosting! Sweet!)

2-pack of Lined wicker baskets on clearance for $1.75

Coupons used:

2 $1/1 Rice Krispies coupons from Vocal Point

1 $.40/3 Swanson's broth from Sunday's insert

2 $1/2 Campbell's soup printable coupon

1 $2/1 All 96-load from insert

2 $.50/1 Purell from insert

3 $1/1 Playtex gloves from insert

2 $1/1 Wheat thins printable

Also used:

2 $7 RRs from Vaseline lotion last week

1 $2 RR from Dental floss last week

1 $3 RR from Chapstick last week

Spent $19 in RRs

Total amount paid cash out of pocket: $.59 (+ $2.45 tax)

And I got $4 back in RRs from the Purell (did two transactions, bought 1 Purell per trans.)

Would it be hard for you to reconcile spending $32 at Walgreens like I did on my purchases from last week? I totally understand. Perhaps it will help if I show you my mental processing on these types of transactions:

The ALL detergent (which I have to buy, even though it's not the cheapest detergent, because of my son's VERY sensitive skin), soup, broth, hand sanitizer, lotion, crackers and cereal are regular necessities at our house. If I don't stock up on them at a sale at Walgreen's or with a coupon when I have it, I end up paying full price for them at Walmart. A transaction at Walmart to purchase these items alone would look something like this (some prices are estimates):

All Detergent: $11.96

Chicken broth: 3 @ $.87 = $2.61

Tomato soup: 4 @ $.69 = $2.76

Purell 2@$2.50 = $5

Rice Krispies: 2 @ $3.18 = $6.36

Wheat thins: (1 lg. box instead of 2 sm.) $2.50

Vaseline Sheer Infusion lotion: 5 @ $5.50 = $27.50

Total approximate cost to purchase these exact items at Walmart: $58.69 + tax. If I used the exact coupons I used on these items at Walgreen's, that would bring the total down to $42.79 + tax.

The basic principle is that by combining sales plus coupons at Walgreens and using the RRs I earned from Free After Register Rewards items to buy necessities for my household, I am actually getting the stuff I really, really need as well as a lot of other useful and fun stuff (like the candy and the dessert dishes for my upcoming shower) for less than the price I would have paid only for the necessities at Walmart. Make sense?
